Update

I've made some notes that could be used for the story.

Japan: Consisting of the Japanese mainland, the connected islands and artificially extended shorelines.
-Population: ~203 million, ~198.6 million Terra firma citizens, ~4.44 million colonial citizens
Kyoto Mass Driver: Located on the Japanese mainland near the shoreline in the Kyoto prefecture.
Colony NJ-01: A colony acting as a hub for commercial and private passage to and from Japan to the colonies, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Along with the other colonies, NJ-01 has pulse lasers for meteorite defense operated by the Japanese military under (UN) supervision.
-Population: ~140,000 Japanese colonial citizens
Colony NJ-02:
-Population: ~1.2 million Japanese colonial citizens
Colony NJ-03:
-Population: ~1.2 million Japanese colonial citizens
Colony NJ-04:
-Population: ~1.2 million Japanese colonial citizens
Colony NJ-05: Under construction.
-Population: ~700,000 Japanese colonial citizens
Lunar Mining Colony: A colony focused on mining, refining and production of materials in a low gravity environment.
-Population: 227 Japanese colonial citizens on a 3-4 month rotational schedule.
Mars Mining Colony: Contains a Mass Driver for moving material into orbit for processing and transport to locations near Earth.
-Population: ~1244 Japanese colonial citizens on a 2 year rotational schedule.
Mars Orbital Station:
-Population: 13 Japanese colonial citizens on a 2 month rotational schedule.

The logical restriction of ballistic, etc, weapons in the space habitats would create an environment where close combat weapons, i.e. swords,  are more prevalent.
